At 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8, gear check opens on Yanonali Street between Gray and Santa Barbara Streets. That is also when the Santa Barbara Half Marathon's published window for road closures and heavy waterfront traffic began last year. The gun goes off at 7:00 on Cabrillo Boulevard near State Street. Then the race spends the rest of the morning moving inland.
Most of what gets shared about race day treats it as one waterfront event with one end time. The course, the start times and the volunteer schedule tell a different story. The morning has two zones with two clocks, and knowing which clock applies to your street decides whether Sunday is a small inconvenience or a stalled car on Shoreline Drive.
Two clocks, one race
The organizers' 2025 road closure page put the closures and heavy traffic between 5:30 and 8:30 a.m., "especially along the waterfront." That window belongs to the start area. The 2026 notice had not been published when this was written, so treat last year's hours as a pattern and confirm the details at santabarbarahalf.com/road-closures.
The 2026 schedule shows why the waterfront window is only half of Sunday.
| Time | Where | What is happening |
|---|---|---|
| 5:30 a.m. | Yanonali St. between Gray and Santa Barbara Sts. | Gear check opens two blocks up from the start line |
| 6:00 a.m. | Yanonali St. at Santa Barbara St. | MoveSB bike valet opens, staffed until noon |
| 7:00 a.m. | Cabrillo Blvd. near State St. | Half marathon starts, with the anthem at about 6:50 |
| 8:00 a.m. | Chase Palm Park Great Meadow | Sunday packet pickup opens, running until noon |
| 8:30 a.m. | State St., toward the Dolphin Fountain | 5K starts, with the anthem at about 8:20 |
| 9:30 a.m. | Course | The 5K's one-hour limit, counted from the first wave's gun time |
| 10:30 a.m. | Course | The half marathon's three-and-a-half-hour limit runs out |
| Noon | Yanonali St. | Bike valet closes |
Read down the table and the day changes character. The 2025 heavy-traffic window ended at 8:30, which is the same minute the 2026 5K starts on State Street. The half marathon's own clock runs to 10:30, and the finish line sits on State Street between Haley and Gutierrez Streets. So the early problem belongs to the waterfront and the late problem belongs to downtown.
The event's scale explains the second shift. The 2025 race sold out with 7,000 runners, about one participant for every dozen or so residents of a city of roughly 88,000. The organizers' FAQ says registration sold out four weeks early in 2025 and that they expect it to sell out earlier in 2026. A field that size does not finish at once. Finishers arrive on State Street from the fastest waves through the last ones before the limit.
The waterfront has a second shift too
The east end of Cabrillo does not go quiet at 8:30 either. Sunday packet pickup runs from 8:00 a.m. to noon at the Chase Palm Park Great Meadow next to Casa Las Palmas. The organizers' pages say there is no official special event parking all weekend. They also say not to park or drop off along Cabrillo next to the Great Meadow or on Garden Street. Two City waterfront lots across from the Carousel House, off Garden Street, are the designated option.
The Funk Zone and West Beach are the areas the parking page marks as largely no-parked for participants and heavily impacted by closures. Lot 12 is flagged as heavily impacted after 5:00 a.m. For a household in those blocks, the practical question is when you need to leave and when you need to be back. The race does not end at 8:30.
Getting across town
The single most useful line in last year's notice covers crossing the course. Drivers who need to get from one side of the route to the other were told to use Montecito Street or the Highway 101 ramps at Garden Street. The rest of the 2025 notice reads like a set of small rules.
- Harbor access stayed open during the event from Loma Alta Drive via Cliff Drive. The Castillo Street off-ramp from 101 was closed, so drivers were told to exit at Las Positas Drive or Carrillo Street and approach Loma Alta from the west on Cliff Drive.
- Residents on Channel Drive could exit at Cabrillo Boulevard.
- Resident egress was available on the westbound side of Shoreline Drive and Meigs Road.
- Anyone wanting to return to that area during the event had to park on streets north of Shoreline Drive.
The fourth rule matters most for a Sunday errand. If you drive out at 7:30 for coffee and try to come back at 9:00, the notice describes a walk from north of Shoreline. It does not describe a driveway. Last year's expected delays ran 7:00 to 9:00 a.m., which is longer than the closure window. Plan the exit and the return as two separate decisions.
Where State Street takes over
By the time the half marathon reaches mile 10, it has left the waterfront. The official course description has runners turning into downtown and onto State Street, then climbing slightly through the historic theater. From there the route loops around the Alameda Park and Alice Keck Park Memorial Garden neighborhoods before descending to the finish. That page still carries references to earlier race years, so check the current course map before relying on a specific street.
The 5K borrows the same corner in the opposite direction. It starts on State Street toward the Dolphin Fountain and Stearns Wharf, turns left onto Cabrillo for a waterfront loop, and finishes on State. The corner of Cabrillo and State hosts the half marathon start at 7:00 and the 5K start at 8:30. If you cross it by car at any time between, you are crossing the race.
The Funk Zone Finish Line Festival sits on Yanonali Street between State and Santa Barbara Streets. Visit Santa Barbara's 2026 listing describes live music, a Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. beer garden and local vendors. The bike valet from MoveSB is at the corner of Yanonali and Santa Barbara, in front of Rincon Brewery, which makes a bicycle the plain option for anyone who wants to reach that corner without hunting for parking.
For spectators and neighbors
A few course rules apply to anyone standing along the route. No pets are allowed on the course. Strollers are not allowed on State Street because of two-way participant traffic. Bicycles, skateboards and roller blades are also excluded from the course.
The middle miles run out and back past Chase Palm Park and the East Beach volleyball courts, so runners come by twice. The organizers note that local entertainers along the route play instruments or amplified music. Race organizers run a dedicated community phone line on race morning for non-emergency noise complaints and other issues.
The event also has a public purpose. Since 2021, the race and its participants have moved more than $190,000 to local organizations through a partnership with the Santa Barbara Running Association, which has run year-round events and youth programs since 1948.
