Solvang

Danish-village cottages and ranchettes in the heart of wine country

Solvang

Solvang sits in the Santa Ynez Valley along Highway 246, which runs through town as Mission Drive, connecting Buellton and Highway 101 to the west with Santa Ynez and Highway 154 to the east. Danish-American settlers founded the town in 1911 on land from the old Rancho San Carlos de Jonata, and Mission Santa Inés, founded in 1804, predates the town by more than a century. The Danish-style architecture visitors know came later, mostly after a 1947 Saturday Evening Post story set off a building and tourism boom. Solvang incorporated as a city in 1985.

Day to day, Solvang is a small, walkable town with a strong sense of its own history. It's home to the Elverhøj Museum of History and Art and a Hans Christian Andersen museum, and Danish Days has run every year since 1936. The wineries and tasting rooms of the Santa Ynez Valley are all around it, and Santa Barbara is about an hour's drive over the pass. Housing ranges from in-town homes close to the village to properties with more land out in the valley. It suits buyers who want a slower pace, wine country at the door and a real community, whether full-time or as a second home.
